Super Mario 64 DS

Super Mario 64 The genre-defining Nintendo 64 classic, arrives on the Nintendo DS with allnew features that take full advantage of the new portable system's dual screens, touch screen and wireless multiplayer capability. Each of the four main characters has multiple jumping moves that cover great horizontal and vertical distances. Each has unique moves: Yoshi can eat enemies and turn them into eggs that he can throw; Mario can punch, kick and wall-jump to great heights; super-strong Wario can break certain blocks; and Luigi can jump incredibly high. Power Flowers give each character even cooler powers, like invisibility, fire breath or the power to float through the air. Answering an invitation, Mario, Luigi and Wario set out for a royal party with Princess Peach. When they arrive at the castle, though, they find it strangely empty. Meanwhile, Yoshi awakes from a rooftop nap to find the castle eerily silent, with Mario, Luigi and Wario nowhere to be seen. Yoshi soon discovers that Bowser has pilfered the castle's Power Stars and imprisoned the Toads in the castle's immense collection of paintings. It's up to the dynamic dino to figure out what happened to Mario, Luigi and Wario and save the day. Play as Mario, Yoshi, Luigi and even Wario. You'll need to use each one's unique abilities to find 150 Power Stars hidden in the castle and grounds. Play through Adventure mode and try your stylus-wielding hand at tons of new touch-sensitive min-games. Battle up to three friends in Wireless Versus mode, which you can play with only one Super Mario 64 DS game card.

Mario Party

Mario Party is the first of several Mario games planned for this year that are being created by developers outside of Nintendo. In this case, the developer is Hudson, a company best known for the Bomberman series, while the others are HAL Systems, the creator of the Kirby line (which is handling the Mario fighting game, Smash Brothers), and Hot Shots Golf maker Camelot (which is doing Mario Golf). Each of the games' focus plays to what the developers know best, in this case, Hudson's knowledge of good multiplayer game modes gleaned from producing countless incarnations of Bomberman, the seminal party-game series

Nintendo 64 Controller - Original Gray

The controller for the Nintendo 64 was designed to be held in several different positions. It could be held by the two outer grips, allowing use of the digital D-pad, right-hand face buttons and the "L" and "R" shoulder buttons (but not the "Z" trigger or analog stick). It could be also held by the center and right-hand grip, allowing the use of the single analog stick, the right hand-buttons, the "R" shoulder button, and the "Z" trigger on the rear (but not the "L" shoulder button or D-pad). Finally, it could be held entirely by the left or right hand by the center grip, allowing it to be held like a pistol for FPS games.[citation needed] More often than not the analog stick was used in games while in some, both the analog stick and directional pad could be interchangeable (ex: Mortal Kombat Trilogy). Very few games used the directional pad exclusively; two examples are the 3D puzzle game Tetrisphere and the side-scrolling platformer Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. The controller also included four "C buttons", which were originally intended to control the camera in the N64's three dimensional environments. However, since the pad only contained three other face buttons, the C-buttons often became assigned to ulterior functions. An example of this is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, where the C-buttons can be assigned to secondary items and the "Z"-trigger is used to orient the camera. One game, Robotron 64 allowed one player to use two controllers to control his avatar. This way the game played like its predecessor, Robotron 2084. The controller initially came only in gray, but other hues were released later on, many of them coinciding with the release of a similarly designed system. Some include: black, red, green, yellow, blue, atomic purple, and special edition colors like gold.

Super Smash Bros

All of your favorite Nintendo characters have come together to answer the question: who is king of the Nintendo hill? The format can aptly be described as Super Mario Kart meets Mortal Kombat, which makes for an odd, yet addictive game. The object is to throw, punch, smash, or blast your opponents off the edge of the beautifully rendered, themed arenas. Numerous power-ups, weapons, and surprises help or hinder the melee. Your eventual goal is to fight your way through to a bizarre final boss character. Victory in this battle rewards you with another character to play, such as the scene-stealing Pokémon, Jigglypuff.

Mario Party 3

Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and all your favorite characters are back in Mario Party 3. This game features 70 minigames that make you use your N64 controller in ways you never thought imaginable. Like its predecessors, up to four people can participate in five areas in board-game-style play. As you traverse the board, you'll have your chances to compete in the aforementioned minigames. Then it's all about button mashing and analog-stick twisting. The gamepad techniques are easily explained, but some of them are tougher than they look. The single-player story mode is an absolute chore filled with as much watching as playing. You're not supposed to play this game alone, hence the word "party" in the title. Multiplayer modes include party, battle royal, and duel. The first two are the basic free-for-alls found in previous games, while duel mode is an interesting addition that combines elements from Othello and Monopoly with the minigames. The various modes help shorten multiplayer game time, which was a problem in previous versions. Mario Party 3 continues the series' tradition of being the top dog of party games. With its numerous easy-to-learn minigames, it's perfect for when you and your friend are looking for quick, mindless fun. --Raymond M. Padilla
