User Reviews about Sega Game Gear - Color Portable Video Game System

NOTE: the 4 star rating is taking into account the time the Sega Game Gear was released.

A lot of people will complain that the Game Gear has many issues and I agree.
Things I liked:
a) nice to hold
b) looks great
c) layout of buttons
d) Sonic games were more awesome to play on this system than any other.
e) great sound
f) the blue version (World Series Baseball) is jaw droppingly beautiful.

Things I didn't like
a) the back light wasn't very powerful after you've played it a bit.
b) broke easily when dropped.
c) a lot of people claimed the Game Gear wasn't very portable.

Just a note:
if you are planning on buying one of these used.
a) make sure it has both battery covers.
b) consider paying a bit more if the sound works. most don't have working sound, but sound usually works through headphone jack with headphones.
c) the backlight may not be very powerful anymore.

Two games I recommend on this system: Ms. Pacman and Vampire: Master of Darkness

-- Back in the day, this was the bomb!
this is the best handheld game besides psp,of course.i ordered my gamegear, got it within 2 business days and couldnt be happier.its just how it was described, impeccable.it came with one game sonic 2.one of my favorites.it works great, the seller even sent it to me with batteries.WHAT A GUY! -- my sega gamegear
i love sega and everything they have done with themselves including the genesis ive had two of those things and i played the hell outta them when i was a kid....the game gear is awesome dont get me wrong but the batteries die so quickly my god i put mine in yesterday and they died today wth? but i love it and its all good -- LOVE THIS SYSTEM!!!
I'm not going to write a review that tells you that game gear is better than game boy or sega is better than nintendo. Truth is, both systems have good qualities. I think both systems bring memorable stories to a conversation at any given time. Does one remember the game gear or the game boy when playing games in the dark?(okay, bad example...) Does one remember game gear or the game boy when constantly asking your dad to pull over and buy some AA batteries at the next gas station on a family trip up north?(okay, another bad example...) Does one remember the sega master system or the NES when trying to find the right combination of passageways in the castle in the very, very last stage of Super Mario Bros. 3?(okay, really bad example). What one often remembers is the cheap game rental prices, saving up pennies, looking for change even in the streets just to rent that last copy of mega man 3 for 99 cents from blockbuster(man, even that last part sounds weird; where did that store go?). Or how about the cumbersome process it was to put that itty bitty game gear cartridge into that big behemoth game genie that was designed for it, then repeat the process with another game in the same sitting? I suppose it's the struggles we endured with these systems we remember more than the victories(i.e., beating super mario 2 for NES for the first time, or making that stupid glider thing fly long enough to cross sonic from that one cliff to another in Sonic 2 for game gear). Struggles like, will I cry or scream if my little sister trips and knocks out the power chord for the super nintendo when I'm on the last level of Doom? Struggles like, how can one love sega and nintendo at the same time? I shall share you a few choice secrets...one can. In fact, I came up with a little mod that helps make both systems interchageable(not trying to take credit here, i'm sure someone out there has already figured this out). One simply needs four things. One: A game gear unit made by sega, not majesco. Two: That weird av cable that one uses to record video onto a TV Now or Vugo unit. Three: A game gear tv tuner. And Four: A super joystick tv game. Make sure both the game gear unit and the super joystick have batteries in their respective compartments. Simply plug the tv tuner into the game gear and turn it on to make sure that static comes up on the screen. You can check to see if any channels come in, but that part really isn't necessary. Take a standard av cable and hook up your super joystick to a regular tv to make sure the batteries inside that weird power pack that inserts into it are in right, in short, if your super joystick turns on and the game menu shows up without the need for the ac adapter that comes with it, you're fine. Then, take the red and white av jacks from your TV Now or Vugo unit. Hook the red jack into the yellow av port and the white jack into the white av port in the super joystick(i've tried the yellow av jack which should have been the right one, but, could hear the audio, and see no video). Hook the green jack that looks like an audio jack from the TV Now or Vugo chord into the game gear tv tuner(which should already be plugged into your game gear). Turn on your game gear. You should see a dark screen, and hear a slight humming. Now turn on your super joystick. You should see the game menu from your super joystick show up on your game gear's screen. Now, keep in mind when you play games, you will have to set the game gear down somewhere(within visibility), because you play the games with the super joystick's control pad. It was a little like having vertigo for me the first time I tried playing games like this, because there was this little feeling that kept trying to get me to grab the game gear control pad to play the games every time I switched both units on. Well, I hope this helps you gamers looking for a portable NES without having to buy all the cartridges(of course, they make cheapy mp4 players that do that now, but if you have one or the other of these items this might help make your christmas a little cheaper). Best of luck to you online shoppers this christmas season in finding what you want, because thanks in part to an understanding seller on amazon, my christmas is a little brighter(thought I'd thank the seller whose amazon.com name is TDUDE20, who made that possible; for whatever reason, amazon won't let me leave him feedback). Happy gaming! -- The system that defines a generation...and still useful!
